An amused LaGrange Mayor Jeff Lukken looks on as student ‘mayor’ Aliyah Dominguez, wearing Lukken’s jacket, takes suggestions for ‘city council’ members at a ‘Meet the Mayor’ session Wednesday at Whitesville Road Elementary School.
Third-graders at Whitesville Road Elementary School who are studying the three levels of government heard Mayor Jeff Lukken describe his duties and responsibilities, then formed their own “city government” at a “Meet the Mayor” session Wednesday.
The mayor organized two three-member teams to debate opposing sides of a recent city proposal to ban texting while driving.
Media specialist Cal Bryan said, “This had a huge impact on the kids in that they actually got to see and meet one of the type of government officials they have been studying.”
Third-grade teachers are Sherri Johnson, Lonnie Thornton, Leisa Gilbert and Rochelle Pompey.
