Man beaten with stick, stabbed in back

Two people were charged with beating a man with a stick and stabbing him in the back with a butcher knife.

Police said Jasmine Swanson, 25, of Garfield Street and Arthelma Cato Jr., 44, of Cooley Road were charged with aggravated assault after an attack on Derrick Rivers, 29, of Garfield Street about 10:45 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Family Dollar at 916 Hogansville Road.

Police said Rivers was in the Summit station at 320 Commerce Ave. when Cato pulled a 3-foot-long stick out of his vehicle, chased him into the Family Dollar parking lot and struck him in the head. Swanson then chased Rivers and stabbed him in the back with the 5-inch butcher knife.

Police said the assailants left in a Toyota Corolla and were picked up later with the knife lying in the grass next to the passenger door and the stick on the center console.

Rivers was treated at West Georgia Medical Center.

Armed men rob apartment

Police said two men forced themselves inside a man’s residence, struck him in the head with a gun and took his wallet about 10 p.m. Friday in Tall Pines Apartments at 150 Turner St.

Andre Fannin, 30, told officers two males wearing ski masks knocked on the door, showed him a handgun and forced themselves inside, demanding money. The two then took Fannin’s cell phone and wallet with $600 inside before striking him in the head with the butt of the gun and fleeing.

Fanning was treated at the medical center.

Teen charged in murder attempt

A 16-year-old Jefferson County, Ala., youth has been charged in the shooting of a West Point man during an armed robbery about 9 p.m. Sept. 28 on East 12th Street.

West Point police said the youth was detained as a runaway juvenile and questioned about the incident. Warrants then were issued for criminal attempt of murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

The youth was being held at the Columbus Youth Detention Center.

Officers said the victim is still hospitalized and continues to improve.

Bike’s brakes fail, leads to accident

A man’s bicycle brakes seized, causing him to strike the passenger side front fender of a Ford Taurus about 3:20 p.m. Saturday at Washington Street and Forrest Avenue.

Police said Drexel Flowers, 35, of Whitesville Street was traveling down Washington Street on his way home from a store. The bicycle’s brakes failed, causing him to run the stop sign and collide with the vehicle driven by Mary Bridges of Forrest Avenue.

Drexel was treated at the medical center for a compound fracture of his left leg and abrasions on his back, and was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign.

Nails in the road

Roofing nails were scattered for “at least a couple of miles” along Whitesville Road south of Interstate 85, according to the 911 Emergency Communications Center, which started getting calls about 7 a.m. today. Three or four mo-torists reported tire damage.

It wasn’t clear how the nails got there. The Department of Transportation was called to assist in the cleanup.

Arrests

— Three men were arrested after an attempted armed robbery about 11:30 p.m. Friday at Tall Tales Bait & Grocery at 3191 New Franklin Road.

The clerk told Troup County sheriff’s investigators she had locked the door and was outside when the robbers, who wore ski masks, put a gun to her head and forced her back into the store, but the alarm went off and the men fled without taking anything.

About 20 minutes later, the suspects were found at a home at 3075 New Franklin Road near the store. They didn’t answer the door immediately and deputies had to wait about three hours to make the arrests. Ski masks and clothing were taken into evidence.

Charged with attempted armed robbery and aggravated assault were Lonnie Wheeler Jr., 21, and Lontel Ronnie Wheeler, 18, both of New Franklin Road, and Tonye Ere Deale, 19, of Turner Street.

— Jerry M. Brown, 43, of Hogansville was arrested Sunday at Ringer Access on New Franklin Road after a sheriff’s deputy determined the trailer Brown was hauling had been stolen in Coweta County. Brown was charged with felony theft by receiving stolen property.

Fires

— A fire reported at 3:19 a.m. Saturday caused an estimated $55,000 damage to the home of Meriam Green and Willie Crawford at 403 Granite St. in Hogansville.

The fire caused heavy damage to the front part of the house, and there was smoke and water damage to the rest of the structure,

The three occupants got out safely.

— A fire reported at 10:18 p.m. Friday on New Hutch-inson Mill Road destroyed a 2007 Chrysler driven by Annie Smith of Newnan. The cause had not been determined.

Thefts, burglaries

— A thief took two amethyst rings, with a total value of $2,000, from a jewelry box in the 200 block of Baywood Circle.

— A Ryobi hedge trimmer, an Echo weed eater and a Husqvarna blower, with a total value of $880, were taken from a storage shed in the 1000 block of Greenville Street.

— A thief stole a 32-gigabyte iPod Touch valued at $359 from a residence in the 100 block of Beeman Street.

— A PlayStation 3 valued at $300 was taken from a basement closet of a residence in the 600 block of Chattahoochee Street.

— A black Nikon digital camera, valued at $150, was taken from a residence in the 400 block of Niles Street.

— A Sirius satellite radio tuner, valued at $150, was stolen from a vehicle in the 2000 block of Warwick Road.

— A Coach purse and a HP digital camera, with a total value of $140, were taken from a vehicle in the Cracker Barrel parking lot at 105 Hoffman Drive.

— A thief took $100 worth of items from a vehicle on East Sixth Street in West Point.

— A T-Mobile sliding cell phone, valued at $100, was taken from a residence in the 100 block of Kings Park Lane.

— A dirt bike valued at $973 was stolen from a residence in the 600 block of Jarrell Hogg Road.

— A 24-year-old LaGrange man said three males came into his room at Great Value Lodge on Whitesville Road and robbed him of an undisclosed amount of money.

— A resident of the first block of Ware’s Cross Road said someone dismantled a $4,000 air-conditioning unit on the side of his house and took parts from it.

Damage

— A vandal threw a rock through a window in the first block of North Cary Street, shattering it and causing about $200 damage.

— A rock was thrown through a car window in the 900 block of New Franklin Road, causing about $200 damage.

— A window was broken in the 1700 block of Park Place, causing about $150 damage.

— A front door was forced open in the 900 block of Mason Street, causing the door jamb to be broken loose from the wall. Damage was less than $500.

— A vandal shattered 10 floodlights illuminating the Moss Creek subdivision sign in the 200 block of River Oak Drive, causing less than $500 damage.
