West Point City Council is set to vote Monday on the first site plan for a 40,000-square-foot building in a proposed business park at Webb and Old Gabbettville roads, near the Kia Motors plant.

The building is expected to house medical offices, including an urgent-care center, eye clinic, physical rehabilitation office, wellness center and pharmacy, all to be primarily used by employees of Kia and adjacent suppliers.

The business park plans are getting their first review from the city, but it’s not the first time the property has been discussed. West Point annexed the land more than a year ago but agreed to keep it zoned for agricultural use for 12 months after Troup County planners objected to a proposed industrial park.

In April, the city finally was able to rezone the property for mixed use development and the medical clinic is the first proposed building. The Greater Valley Group, which is developing the property, has plans to eventually put a day-care facility in the park as well as other offices.

The day care also would be geared toward Kia employees with hours convenient for those on all shifts.

“We are anxious to get started,” said Walter Sheely, Greater Valley Group CEO.

Although the clinic and day care are geared toward Kia employees, the businesses would be available to all residents in the area.

Sheely said the development still was in negotiations over which area hospital it may affiliate with, but the clinic and offices are expected to employ up to 75 people. Construction on the building should begin in January with the offices open by late 2010.
