Dear Editor: Thought I’d drop you a line after reading multiple articles regarding the Zumba class at the Mike Daniel Rec Center. It’s a wonderful thing that Zumba has generated not only an increase in revenue, but an interest in exercise in our community. You briefly mentioned other classes offered at the rec center in your latest article. I am the belly dance instructor and have had ongoing classes for women Tuesday and Thursday evenings for the past four years. Not only is belly dancing an empowering low-impact, toning class for ladies of all ages, our group takes it one step further. My dance troupe, The A.M.E.N.A. Fusion dancers, gives to the community by co-sponsoring with the Wingmen Motorcycle Club, an annual run for breast cancer. We choose a woman in our community and all proceeds from the event go directly to her to help with her treatment expenses. On Saturday, Oct. 3, we raised $8,300 for Patti Brazeal. Last year, we sponsored Martha Peel, who happens to be one of our dance troupe members. This event is supported by the VFW Post 4629 here in LaGrange, the Combat Vets, Opelika, the American Legion, Opelika, and of course, The Wingmen, Opelika, as well as many local small business owners. My belly dancers are very involved in community events, donating free shows for charitable events. They are an amazing group of women and I’m very proud of our achievements. Just thought you might be interested in some of the other things things happening here in town. Sincerely, Dawn Guinn Belly dance instructor LaGrange
