Baker, who has been news editor for eight years, succeeds Andrea Lovejoy, who is retiring Nov. 20.
“LaGrange Daily News has a reputation for being one of the best small daily newspapers in the state,” he said. “I look forward to helping continue that tradition.”
Publisher Lynn McLamb praised Baker as a key member of the newspaper staff whose abilities and experience allowed the paper to plan for a smooth transition.
“Day in and day out, we know we can count on Dan for solid leadership,” she said. “It will be a pleasure to work with him in his new role here at LaGrange Daily News. His values and news judgment are tested and true.”
Lovejoy echoed her support.
“My decision to retire was made much easier knowing the paper will have the sound guidance of Dan Baker as editor. He has been my right hand - and my left hand, too - since he joined the paper and has the trust and respect of everyone in the newsroom,” she said.
A veteran newspaperman, Baker is a lifelong Georgian, born and reared in Macon. He has a degree in journalism from the University of Georgia and a master’s in education from Mercer University.
He began his newspaper career as a teenager working as a copy clerk for the Macon Telegraph. After college, he had stints as a high school teacher and retail store manager before returning to newspapers in 1983.
He held editing positions with the Macon News and the Macon Telegraph and News before becoming managing editor of the Union-Recorder in Milledgeville for 10 years. Baker returned to the Macon Telegraph before joining the Athens Banner-Herald. He rejoined the Milledgeville newspaper before moving to LaGrange Daily News in 2001.
Baker is an award-winning writer and helped edit a series that won a Pulitzer Prize for the Telegraph.
His interests include history, music and antiques. On Tuesday nights he can be found playing trivia with a team at a downtown LaGrange restaurant.
