To the editor:

Since 1775 there has been a U.S. Marine Corps and as long as there is a United States of America there will continue to be Marines serving their country. To quote the current commandant, “United States Marines represent the best young men and women our nation has to offer. To be a Marine is to be a member of America’s warrior class - to be one of the few who steps forward with the courage and conviction to face what ever dangers await. Our nation expects her Marines to be ready when the nation calls.” I can assure you, they are.

Our corps is adding new names to our long and storied history. Such names as Al Anbar, Helmand Province, Delaram, Now Zad and Garmsir to go along with all the familiar names of the past.

As we celebrate this 234th birthday, we pause to reflect and pay tribute to all who have gone before and especially those who have given the last full measure of service. We must also extend our gratitude to the families of those who serve. Without their support we could not endure the hardships necessary to accomplish our mission.

To those who wear the uniform today and all who have gone before, I wish you happy birthday and Semper Fidelis.
