The West Georgia Veterans’ Council is hosting its annual memorial service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the veterans’ memorial at the Troup County Government Center at 100 Ridley Ave.
This year’s ceremony will feature the national anthem sung by Max and Marcelene New, two-thirds of the Good News Trio. The council will continue the tradition it began last year, reading the names of veterans who have died in the last year. The Rev. Tony Dean from Loyd Presbyterian Church and Patricia Rogers, a spokeswoman for West Georgia Health System, will read the names.
Veterans also will lay a wreath at the memorial, read the poem “Flanders Field” and sing “God Bless America.”
A similar ceremony will be held in Hogansville at 11 a.m. at Calvin Hipp Veterans’ Memorial Park.
A free bus trip will take veterans to the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center at Patriot Park in Columbus for a guided tour of the museum, an IMAX movie and lunch Wednesday. The bus will leave the Batson-Cook Construction parking lot at 801 4th Ave. in West Point at 8 a.m. and return about 3 p.m. To make reservations, call Chaitra Ziebarth at (706) 643-2538.
