The high-school basketball season will kick off on Thursday - sort of.
LaGrange will host Spalding County, but the games won’t count in the standings.
The scrimmage will kick off at 6 p.m. with the girls’ game, and the boys’ teams will play at 7:30 p.m.
In place of admission, LaGrange boys’ coach Mike Pauley is asking spectators to bring “a canned food item or two for our local food closet.”
The Grangers are kicking off a season filled with high expectations.
Most of the key contributors from last year’s 20-9 team are back.
“We’ve improved in each of the last three seasons, and we’re hoping that continues,” said Pauley, who led his team to the state tournament last season.
Spalding County will be a tough challenge.
A year ago, the Jaguars went 21-6 and finished second in Region 3-AAA.
The Lady Grangers also made the state tournament, and most of the key players from that team return.
Spalding’s girls’ team went 19-8 and advanced to the state tournament.
LaGrange’s season officially kicks off on Tuesday against Harris County.
Callaway and Troup still have awhile before their seasons begin.
Troup visits Greenville on Dec. 1, and Callaway hosts Greenville on Dec. 4.
In private-school basketball, LaGrange Academy opens its season on Tuesday at home against Furtah Prep.
Dawson Street Christian School’s boys’ team will be in action Nov. 20 at The Heritage School.
Lafayette Christian School begins its season Dec. 4 at home against Golden Acres.
In college basketball, LaGrange College’s women’s team kicks off its season on Sunday at Emory, while LaGrange’s men’s team will visit Birmingham-Southern on Monday.
