The playoff road will grow considerably more rugged for the Callaway Cavaliers this week.
After dispatching Riverside Military Academy 47-7 Friday night in the first round of the Class AA state playoffs, the Cavs will host Westminster School Friday night in a second-round test.
The Wildcats (8-3), who finished second in the tough Region 6-AA, beat Armuchee 28-6 in the first round.
“Westminster comes out of one of the toughest regions in the state,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said. “But our kids believe they can win right now, and we’re going to work hard beginning (today).”
The Cavs have reason to be confident.
After opening the season with losses to Troup and Lovett, Callaway has won nine in a row, and all of those wins have come in blowout fashion.
Westminster is the best team Callaway has played since it lost to Lovett in Week 2, though.
Like Callaway, Westminster lost its first two games before getting hot.
The Wildcats are 8-1 since that tough start, and one of those wins was a 21-6 victory over a Lovett team that beat Callaway 56-28.
Westminster finished second in its region to Buford.
Callaway is trying to advance to the third round for the first time in school history.
