Fire destroys house; candle suspected

A fire reported at 4:24 p.m. Sunday destroyed the home of Steve and Rebecca Johnson at 3 Carnegie Court off Pyne Road.

Troup County fire Lt. Jeb Howington said the couple were riding motorcycles at the time of the blaze, but their two daughters, ages 16 and 10, were at home. He said it appeared that a candle in one of the girls’ bedroom ignited curtains and the fire spread into the attic. Flames were coming through the roof when emergency personnel ar-rived.

“Firefighters tried an interior attack, but the ceiling started to collapse” and they had to retreat, Howington said.

The loss was estimated at $190,000.

Dog bite

A resident of the 1200 block of Warner Road said a neighbor’s pet bulldog came into her yard and bit her.

A resident of the 200 block of Stovall Road said someone shot and killed his chow-German shepherd mix dog.

Locked vehicles broken into

Thieves stole items after breaking into locked vehicles in the Hampton Inn parking lot at 100 Willis Circle.

Police said a Ford F150 was missing a Nextel I850 cell phone and a purse, all valued at $160; another F-150 was missing a Garmin GPS system and a pack of cigarettes, $305; and a Ford Expedition had a Garmin GPS system and an MP3 player taken, $350.

Another F-150 was broken into Friday, but nothing was taken.

Vehicles at school damaged

Three Troup High School vehicles were vandalized and one burglarized late Friday night.

Police said two of the vehicles, a Honda Element and an Acura RL, each had one tire slashed. A Jeep Wrangler had a tire and its soft top slashed as well as a window broken. The vandals then took a calculator, hair straightener, stereo and jacket, with a total value of $420.

Fire

A fire reported at 9:10 p.m. Friday caused an estimated $2,500 damage to the kitchen of 128 Lafayette Court.

Deputy Fire Chief Ray Stewart said the fire was attributed to unattended cooking, and damaged the stove and cabinets of the house. The fire was under control about 10 minutes after firefighters arrived.

Thefts, burglaries

— A man in the 500 block of Thrash Road said someone entered his work truck and stole a GPS system and power cord. The items were valued at $290.

— A 1992 Chevrolet pickup valued at $2,500 was stolen in the 800 block of Lower Big Springs Road.

— A GE washer and dryer and components to a central heating and air unit, with a total value of $1,100, were taken from a vacant residence in the 100 block of Hamilton Road.

— A Kel-Tec handgun, a Dell laptop and a silver iPod, with a total value of $900, were taken from a truck in the 100 block of Wynnwood Drive.

— A thief took an Acer computer valued at $700 from a residence in the 600 block of Borton Street.

— A silver Coach wallet and an Apple iPhone with a total value of $670 were taken from a vehicle in the 200 block of Alford Street.

— A Dell laptop valued at $400 was taken from a residence in Lee’s Crossing Apartments at 119 Old Airport Road.

— Video game consoles, including a Sony PlayStation and a Sega Genesis, with a total value of $170, were taken from a residence in the 200 block of Cherry Street.

— A Nextel I850 cell phone and a purse, with a total value of $160, were taken from a vehicle in the Hampton Inn parking lot at 100 Willis Circle.
