It’s just another week for the Callaway football team.
Fresh on the heels of an emotional 35-31 win over Westminster School last week in the second round of the Class AA state playoffs, it’s business as usual this week for the Cavaliers with the third-round match-up at Fitzgerald looming on Friday.
Monday’s practice was “physical,” and today’s will be as well, according to head coach Pete Wiggins, and Wednesday and Thursday will be lighter.
“We’re going to practice like we always do,” Wiggins said. “It’s going to be just like the week before the first game against Troup. We’re not changing anything.”
Although players have a few days off from school this week, the Cavaliers will still be preparing for the game over Thanksgiving break.
Because students are off from Wednesday to Friday, the team will practice at 9 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday before leaving for Fitzgerald at 11 a.m. on Friday.
On Thanksgiving, the Cavaliers will have a light run-through prior to a team cook-out.
WRONG SIDE OF THE COIN: Callaway lost the coin flip that decided which team would have home field advantage for Friday’s game.
Since both teams are No. 1 seeds, Wiggins and some other staff members met Fitzgerald coaches in Macon on Saturday with their fingers crossed.
The flip didn’t fall in the Cavaliers’ favor, but that’s no matter to Callaway players and coaches.
“We’re excited about where we’re at,” Wiggins said. “Sure, we’d like to have home field for the game but we’re excited about the opportunity. There are only eight teams left in the state and we’re one of them. We’re trying to take the next step.”
Fitzgerald is unbeaten this season, and have scored 106 points in its two playoff wins this postseason.
The Purple Hurricanes are tough at home, but the Cavaliers will be ready for it.
“Fitzgerald is a good team and it’s going to be a great atmosphere,” Wiggins said. “We’ll be ready for it.”
INJURIES: The Cavaliers haven’t been decimated by injuries this year, but they’re feeling them 13 weeks into the season.
Backup fullback and linebacker Hunter Harrington broke his ankle two weeks ago, and likely won’t play the rest of this year.
Senior defensive and offensive lineman Michael Rosser also tore his ACL and won’t be playing in this week’s game.
Despite those two injuries, there haven’t been any other setbacks other than the usual “bumps and bruises,” according to Wiggins.
“If some guys are injured, they’ll take it easy in practice,” Wiggins said. “But if they’re not they’re going to practice hard.”
LESLIE’S DECISION: Senior wide receiver Quantavius Leslie has scholarship offers from all over, but he’s narrowed his college decision down to four.
While he verbally committed to West Virginia earlier this year, he’s still talking to Tennessee, Auburn and South Florida in addition to the Mountaineers.
He’ll make a final decision between the four schools soon.
