On Nov. 20, a number of Christian leaders held a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to announce the release of the Manhattan Declaration signed by 164 Catholic, evangelical and Orthodox leaders. It has been called a historic call to Christian conscience.
Quoting from the declaration it is to affirm and defend the fundamental truths of:
1 - The sanctity of human life.
2 - The dignity of marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife.
3 - The rights of conscience and religious liberty.
Two days after this press conference I went to www.manhattandeclaration.org and took the approximate eight minutes to read it. I was in agreement with it, so I took another two minutes to electronically sign it. At the time there were 23,000 others who had done so in the intervening two days. As I write this on Thanksgiving morning, another 120,000-plus have also signed it in the four days since I did. Regardless of your religious persuasion, I encourage you take the few minutes to at least acquaint yourself with these issues which are increasingly dividing our country.
Chuck Colson, one of the original signatories, says, “Most professing Christians don’t know what they believe, and so can neither understand nor defend the Christian faith-much less live it.” In response to that he released his 20th book late last year “The Faith: What Christians Believe, Why They Believe It, and Why It Matters.” I will be teaching from this book over six weeks beginning in February on TV33.
Are we at a time as described by St. Augustine hundreds of years ago where we must choose between the “City Of Man” and the “City of God?”
