Five family members escaped a fire this morning at the home of Carolyn Scott at 5787 Dallas Mill Road in Meriwether County.

The fire, reported at 5:49 a.m., was blamed on a malfunctioning space heater in a bedroom. It spread into another bedroom, as well as the kitchen, laundry room, attic and underneath the house. Flames were shooting through the roof when firefighters arrived.

There was smoke and water damage throughout the residence.

Damage was estimated at $39,000.

Police said the woman was walking toward the box at the rear of her building when a small black-and-white dog on a leash ran from a tether line and bit her on the leg.

The woman was treated at West Georgia Medical Center for two puncture wounds that she had bandaged before leaving the residence.

The owner told officers he had put the animal on a shorter leash to keep it confined to the yard and the dog was up-to-date on its vaccinations.
