The Troup County school board did not recommend changes at West Side Magnet School and Cannon Street Elementary School as it reviewed budget-cutting options Wednesday.

Among the options that had been proposed included eliminating the fine-arts focus at West Side and converting it to a regular school for kindergarten through fifth grade. Another proposal would convert Cannon Street into a centralized pre-kindergarten facility.

Neither option was recommended at a called meeting as the board attempts to battle state budget cuts. A public hearing on those two options will not be held Monday as scheduled, but Wednesday’s lack of action doesn’t mean they have escaped the chopping block for good.

The system is looking at a budget deficit of $8.2 million by fiscal year 2013. Changing West Side and Cannon Street are still options if state budget cuts are deeper than expected, officials said.

On Wednesday, the board approved:

n Continuing to explore changing attendance zones to proximity boundaries rather than student choice;

n Reducing three full-time administrative positions;

n Suspending the elementary student design choice plan;

n Looking at using 10 percent to 20 percent of the system reserve for the year;

n Switching to a four-day work week or a shortened calendar, and

n Placing a freeze on the salary scale.
