The Hillcrest Elementary fourth-grader said: “The classmate told me that she doesn’t get as many presents as regular kids do because she is a foster child.”
Tayler, 10, decided to take action.
“I wanted to do something to make sure she got what she wanted for Christmas,” she said.
Her friend wanted a Nintendo DS. Tayler went home immediately and told her mom, “I am going to get her one.”
Tayler’s mom, Brandy Knight, said: “After Tayler came home, we all talked about it, and there is a group of kids who decided they wanted to do something about getting gifts to kids in need.”
The idea was born to have a bake sale to raise money to do such that.
“Christmas is a time to celebrate Jesus’ birth,” said Tayler’s sister, Shelby Knight, 12. “He was a gift so we want to give gifts. Brandy kind of threw the idea out there about the bake sale. We thought about all the kids who may not get as much as we do for Christmas, and we wanted to do something for them.”
The bake sale will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of Scoops Ice Cream at 1302 Lafayette Parkway. The children, along with help from their mothers and grandmothers, will have cakes, pies, chocolate-covered pretzels, chocolate-dipped marshmallows, old-fashioned potato candy and more. The children attend Oakside Baptist Church.
Mark McCain, 7, a second-grader at Whitesville Road Elementary School, said, “Sometimes, at Christmas, I don’t get all the gifts I ask for, but that is OK because I figure another kid who needs it more then me is getting the gift.”
All proceeds from the bake sale will go toward shopping for Christmas gifts on Saturday.
Brandy Knight said, “Sparky Smallwood, a member of Oakside Baptist Church, has been working for several years with local neighborhoods to help provide Christmas presents for families who can’t afford it on their own. The kids are going with Sparky to deliver the presents.”
Mark said, “We’re doing this so that the kids won’t feel left out and they won’t think they aren’t special.”
Tayler said, “I bought my friend a Christmas puzzle today at school. She was so happy.
“Giving makes me happy.”
