Seventeen wrestlers from Callaway, LaGrange and Troup took the mat this morning for the semifinals after making it through Tuesday’s action unscathed.
Troup led the way with eight, followed by LaGrange with six and Callaway with three.
For the host Cavaliers, Brandon Hontz, Zach McIntyre and Ryan Kiss wrestled in the semifinals this morning, hoping to secure a spot in the finals, which were set to start around 2 p.m.
Callaway head coach J.J. Wahl would love to see Hontz and McIntyre, who have been staples of the program for years, win a championship in their home gym.
“It’d be a big deal for them to place first in their senior year,” Wahl said.
With its eight unbeaten wrestlers through the first day, Troup stood it third place behind Northgate and Spencer.
Jeremy Thornton (103 pounds), Stephen Cain (119), Morgan Ledbetter (125), Adam Lundberg (140), Lucas Bridges (145), Kyle Nixon (171), Alex McGhee (189) and Tim Hart (275) each made it through Tuesday unbeaten.
Clint DeMooney, one of Troup’s coaches, said the team is making nice strides as the area tournaments draw closer.
“We’re happy with the progress,” DeMooney said. “Area is coming up. That’s what are goals are set for. We really look at these tournaments as an extension of practice, to see how we can get better.”
LaGrange’s unbeaten wrestlers on Tuesday were David McCabe (103), Sam Jenkins (125), John Parker (135), Braden Duke (140) and Rhian Patterson (215).
The Grangers were seventh after Day 1, and coach Scooter Weathers hopes his team is able to move up the leaderboard today.
“Even the ones who lost, they need to come back and score some points, and maybe we can get top four,” Weathers said.
