In the Dec. 15 edition of the paper, a Mr. Smith questioned the “true” meaning of Christmas. I read the article and have not been able to just let his editorial go unanswered. Based on my faith, I truly believe he does not understand the “true”meaning of the Christmas season.
The “true” meaning of Christmas is a story of love of a father for his children. Very simple concept. This father loved his children so much that he sent them a present (baby Jesus). This present would help save them from their sin and the sins of the world. Mr. Smith did recognize some these sins in his editorial he just thought they were the reason(s) for the holiday.
To me the “true” meaning of Christmas is in this love story. The “true” meaning of the 4th of July is not parades, barbecues and fireworks. The celebration of the 4th is suppose to be for the freedom(s) we enjoy BECAUSE of the sacrifice of many brave soldiers and leaders. The “true” meaning of Christmas is not in the things that Mr. Smith mentioned. If he had just read the article on the front page of the same page, he would have read of the story of how one little girl’s love led to a group raising money to purchase gifts for less fortunate children. This is the meaning of Christmas.
Since this article will probably not make the paper before Christmas, I hope is that Mr. Smith found some “true” love during Christmas. I am always amazed our how peaceful the world seems on late Christmas Eve. It seems that all things settle in for the anticipation of the “true” present. It is the love and hope that came with that present many, many years ago that provide the “true” meaning of the Christmas season.
