For the second straight week, there will be plenty of top-notch wrestling taking place in Troup County.

Last week, 15 teams took part in the Callaway High Invitational.

Today and Wednesday, it’ll be LaGrange High’s turn to take center stage as it hosts the 14-team LaGrange Invitational.

The tournament was supposed to feature 15 teams, but Heard County pulled out at the last minute.

LaGrange’s tournament features four teams from Alabama and 10 from Georgia, including the host Grangers and the Callaway Cavaliers.

“It’s a strong field,” La-Grange coach Scooter Weathers said. “We’ll get to see a lot of different teams we haven’t seen.”

The semifinalists will be determined today, with the semifinals set to begin at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Weathers said he’s aiming to have the finals begin around 1 p.m.

“We’re going to have three mats going at once,” Weathers said. “We’re going to roll them and go.”

The Grangers are coming off a sixth-place performance in the Callaway tournament that included a runnerup finish by Sam Jenkins at 125 pounds.

The Grangers are a sophomore-dominated team, and Weather said the goal is for the young wrestlers to be at their best when the area duals roll around on Jan. 8.

“I’m hoping we’ll peak pretty soon,” Weathers said. “In 2005, we didn’t peak the whole year, and we went to the area tournament and won our first tournament of the year there. It’d be nice if we could do that again.

“We’re young, but we’re getting better.”

For Callaway, Brandon Hontz is looking to win his fourth tournament of the year, while Zach McIntyre hopes to add another title to his belt after claiming a title at the Callaway meet last week
