A sleepy driver may be responsible for a wreck in which an Atlanta teenager suffered critical injuries Wednesday when he was ejected from a van as it overturned six times on Interstate 85 about two miles south of Hogansville.

Jose Alfredo Perez, 16, was flown by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center, along with 17-year-old Allen Huerta, who suffered a broken right arm and had to be rescued from the van by county firefighters using the “Jaws of Life” power tool.

Yoban Martinez, 19, who was driving the 2004 Ford van, and a 12-year-old who did not appear to be injured were taken to West Georgia Medical Center. Martinez, who had head injuries and a possible broken shoulder, later was transferred to Columbus Regional Medical Center.

State trooper J.D. Perry said the four Atlanta residents were returning from Mexico about 10:40 a.m. when the van traveled off the highway and the driver over-corrected. The van went into the soft grass of the median and the left front tire dug into the grass, causing the van to roll.

Martinez, who was charged with failure to maintain lane, may have fallen asleep at the wheel, Perry said.
