The Callaway boys’ basketball team ended 2009 on a high note.
The Cavaliers (6-2, 2-1 Region 5-AA) rebounded from two disappointing losses to win four straight last month before taking a break for the holidays, and they’ll pick up from where they left off today against Heard County in Hogansville.
Callaway coach Greg Moultrie and the team have been “fine-tuning” some things in preparation for the second half of the season, which includes some tough Region 5-AA tests.
“We want to continue to do what we’ve done well,” Moultrie said. “We’ve been practicing and scrimmaging each other a lot, and they’re looking forward to playing another game.”
No game is bigger than tonight’s match-up with the Braves (6-4), who are leading the region with a 3-1 record.
Callaway defeated Heard in both match-ups last season, but it’ll be a tough task to slow down the Braves’ senior star in Santez Emory.
“This game is big for us,” Moultrie said. “Heard County is a good team and they’re coached well.”
Tonight’s game, as well as Saturday’s non-region contest with Greenville, will be played at Hogansville Elementary.
Callaway already played one game there this season, a loss to LaGrange.
The added fact that many Hogansville residents will come to the game when they normally wouldn’t go to a regular Callaway home game is an added plus for the Cavaliers.
“A lot of our guys grew up in Hogansville,” Moultrie said. “People who come to the games are the ones who watched them grow up.”
