Local and national efforts are under way to aid residents of Haiti after a major earthquake killed more than 50,000 people and left 300,000 people without shelter when more than 10 percent of the homes in Port-au-Prince were demolished.

Here are some ways to help:

n American Red Cross, 800-733-2767. To make an appointment to donate blood or for specific information about giving blood specifically for Haiti, go to www. redcrossblood.org or call (706) 317-3529.

n Episcopal Relief and Development, 800-334-7626 or St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in LaGrange at (706) 884-1568.

n Habitat for Humanity, 800-422-4828 or call the local organization at (706) 837-0702.

n Georgia Baptist Convention, contact any Baptist church or call the Troup County Baptist Association at (706) 884-1975

n Salvation Army, 800-725-2769 or contact the local Salvation Army unit at (706) 845-0197.

Aid organizations say cash donations are best. Here are some that are accepting donations:

n InterAction has a list of agencies responding and how to donate. Find it here: http://www. interaction.org /crisis-list/earthquake-haiti

n To donate $10 to the Red Cross, text Haiti to 90999. The amount will be added to your next phone bill. The organization also is accepting donations through its International Response Fund, www.redcross.org

n To find out how to help the International Rescue Committee, visit www. theIRC.org or call 877-REFUGEE toll-free.

n To donate through Oxfam’s emergency appeal, visit www.oxfam.org.uk

n To donate to Partners in Health, which was already providing health care in Haiti and is now working on relief efforts, visit www. pih.org. The group is also looking for surgeons, nurses and surgical teams who want to volunteer to help.

n To donate to Doctors Without Borders, which is also treating earthquake victims, go to www. doctorswithoutborders.org

LaGrange Daily News is looking for Troup County connections to the earthquake in Haiti and for local relief efforts. E-mail Becky Holland at bholland@ lagrangenews.com or call (706) 884-7311, Ext. 229.
