John Rhodarmer and his steed face off at a ‘donkeyball’ fundraiser Friday night.
It was a far cry from a fast-paced basketball game, but the Troup High School gym was packed for a ‘donkeyball’ fundraiser Friday night.
A team of school staff members and alumni played a team from radio station WCJM in West Point to raise money for the Troup Dugout Club.
The game is a simplified version of basketball, with players trying to put the ball through the net. There were no fouls called, and the only real rule was that a player had to be sitting on his donkey when he made a shot for it to count.
The players may have been enthusiastic, but the animals showed the stubbornness that their breed is famous for, often coming to a complete halt or bolting away from their riders and running away. The animals did not have saddles, adding to the players’ difficulty.
The spectators laughed as the players juggled holding the reins, mounting their donkeys and then passing the ball.
