It was an unexpected result Saturday for the Callaway boys’ basketball team.
The Cavaliers, who once led Region 5-AA with a 5-1 record, fell to 6-5 in region play with a 55-54 loss to Macon County in Montezuma.
It was the fourth loss in five games for Callaway, and the team wasn’t coached by Greg moultrie on Saturday.
The Cavaliers were instead led by Trey Tucker and girls’ coach Michael Fannin.
Moultrie said it was “an internal issue that I would rather not comment about,” but did say he would return for the team’s road game at Heard County on Tuesday.
To make matters worse for the Cavaliers, senior leader Quantavius Leslie didn’t play because he was taking an official visit to West Virginia.
Leslie plans on signing with West Virginia for football on Wednesday.
D.J. Rutledge led the Cavs with 23 points, followed by Reggie Perry with 10 points and Chris Laye with eight.
Macon County previously had just one win in region play.
The loss makes Callaway a long-shot to earn one of the top two spots in the region, with Manchester and Spencer leading the region with just two losses.
“This has put us in a position where we must play well in the region tournament and fight to make a push for state,” Moultrie said.
The Lady Cavs also lost 68-34 on Saturday and remained winless in Region 5-AA.
