On signing day in 2007, LaGrange High’s Mychal Bailey sent his letter of intent to play for the Kentucky Wildcats.

Three years later, it looks like Bailey is finally going to get the chance to play for the Wildcats.

After two standout seasons at Southwest Mississippi Community College, Bailey signed with Kentucky on Wednesday, and he’ll join the team this summer.

The linebacker becomes the latest LaGrange High player to go to Kentucky, and head coach Joker Phillips is happy to have him.

“He runs and hits, like every LaGrange player we have had here,” said Phillips, who is replacing Rich Brooks. “They all run, hit, and they love playing football.”

Bailey, who didn’t play his first season out of high school, had 161 total tackles in his two years at Southwest.

In 2009, he was selected a second-round pick on the junior college all-American team, and he was first-team all-state and all-region.

Phillips believes Bailey will be able to come in and be a contributor right away.

“He is a guy that we will start out at safety,” Phillips said. “He also returns kicks. We feel like he could have a huge presence on this football team next year.”

Bailey had a remarkable senior season at LaGrange.

He was second on the team in tackles, averaged nearly 45 yards per kickoff return with two touchdowns, and even threw a 61-yard touchdown pass.
