Two Troup County students will be recognized as regional contest winners for Communities in Schools’ Student Achievement Month contest.

Long Cane Middle School’s Christiana Burdette and Gardner Newman Middle School’s Karina Gomez will be honored with other students in 17 other Georgia counties for their projects.

Students submitted entries in four categories: written expression, creative expression, public speaking and computer technology. Local winners moved on to regional competition, and 29 of those students are vying for an opportunity to be a state contest winner.

State winners will be honored at a luncheon in Atlanta on March 11 at the Georgian Terrace hotel. Each of the state winners will receive a new computer, printer and educational software applicable to their grade level. High school seniors can opt for a $1,000 scholarship, and prizes are paid with the help of CIS sponsors.

The contest was designed to recognize some of the state’s students who are sometimes overlooked and often expected to underachieve, officials said. The contest helps students set new goals and gain a better understanding of the importance of academic achievement and staying in school

“We know that with the right resources and encouragement all kids can succeed in school and prepare for successful futures,” said Carol Lewis, chief operating officer for Communities In Schools of Georgia.

Communities In Schools is the nation’s largest-dropout prevention organization. It partners with local school systems and community organizations to connect needed resources and services to kids and families.

In Georgia, 50 CIS local affiliates reach more than 160,000 students in 66 school systems.

Key program areas include mentoring, tutoring, parent engagement, literacy, after-school programs, youth leadership development and Performance Learning Centers.
