One of the question marks coming into the 2008 season for the Callaway Cavaliers was the quarterback position.
It didn’t take long for that question mark to be erased.
In replacing his brother Justin, Demetrius Heard hadn’t taken a snap under center at the high school level prior to this season.
Heard has lived up to expectations, and maybe even surpassed them.
The senior has completed 28-of-67 passes for 667 yards with 12 touchdowns and only four interceptions.
Heard has also done damage on the ground, gaining 554 yards and six scores.
Head coach Pete Wiggins had faith in Heard since spring practice.
“We knew what he could do,” Wiggins said. “He’s a leader.”
Heard is just one part of a dynamic offense that has gotten it done on the ground and in the air.
Heard’s favorite target over the season was Quantavious ‘Q’ Leslie, who reeled in 15 passes for 363 yards and nine touchdowns.
At running back, sophomore Quan Bray followed his sensational freshman campaign with another great season. Bray has run for 1,034 yards on 104 attempts and 14 touchdowns.
He’s also caught three passes for 68 yards and a score.
Bray has also been a force on special teams, taking back multiple kickoffs for scores.
While Bray is the game-breaker, fullback Tharius Tigner gives the Cavaliers the tough yards inside. The senior rushed for 849 yards and nine touchdowns in the regular season.
Bernard Phillips gives the Cavaliers a dual threat on offense.
Phillips ran for 253 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns, while catching six passes for 196 yards and two scores.
Add it all up, and it’s no surprise the Cavaliers have been nearly impossible to stop this season.
Callaway has averaged 347 yards — including 281 yards rushing — and 32 points per game.
