A second snowstorm in less than a week hit parts of the South unaccustomed to dealing with the frosty precipitation.

Snow fell in parts of Alabama early today. But LaGrange and much of the rest of Georgia was spared after earlier forecasts called for up to 2 inches. Overnight temperatures stayed above freezing, and it rained instead of snowed before dawn today.

Troup County escaped the worst of the wintry precipitation, although there was a slight chance of snow this afternoon.

A cold front is forecast to move into West Georgia today, dropping nighttime lows into the 20s through Thursday. Highs should be in the 40s Tuesday and Wednesday, rising to the lower 50s Thursday.

Cities ill-equipped to deal with icy roads and snow were hit by a snowstorm Friday and Saturday. The storm canceled thousands of flights at the country’s busiest airport in Atlanta and was blamed for hundreds of traffic accidents.

LaGrange received 3 to 3.5 inches in downtown areas, but most of it melted as temperatures rose into the lower 50s Sunday.

But residents took advantage of the snowfall to play in it and create snow sculptures.

The National Weather Service said northern Alabama could see up to 3 inches of snow today. Snow was also forecast up through Tennessee to Kentucky.
