The season came to a heart-breaking conclusion for the Troup Tigers, who dropped a 67-62 overtime decision to the Carver Tigers Tuesday afternoon in the Region 2-AAA tournament.
It was a game the Tigers had to have if they wanted to keep their season alive.
Instead, the Tigers saw their season come to a close, while Carver advanced to the region semifinals Thursday against LaGrange.
The Tigers fought back from a seven-point halftime deficit to tie it at the end of regulation, but they were unable to finish the comeback.
“We knew it was going to be tough,” Troup head coach Thermond Billingslea said. “You have to do what you need to do. We didn’t get it done. That’s the bottomline.”
The Tigers finished 7-14, but for Billingslea, it was a season of what could have been.
Most of the games the Tigers played this season were close, and they lost most of them.
Ten of Troup’s 10 losses were by single digits, including a seven-point loss to unbeaten LaGrange in the regular-season finale.
At one point, Troup lost four straight games by a combined 10 points.
“Maybe next year we’ll be more experienced and we’ll win these games like this,” Billingsea said.
Carver left 17-13 after the first quarter, and it was ahead 29-22 at the half.
Carver’s lead was down to 39-38 through three quarters, and it was tied 57-57 at the end of regulation.
The Tigers were ahead by as many as five points in the fourth period, but they couldn’t hold the lead.
Eric Bridges led Troup with 22 points, while senior Kendrick Ward added 12 points in his final game.
Kannan Patterson contributed 11 points.
