A woman was taken to an Atlanta hospital after being injured near a flight of stairs near LaGrange College’s Frank and Laura Lewis Library at 601 Broad St.

Police said Mertle Morris, 86, of Winzor Avenue was found lying at the bottom of the staircase by athletic trainer Rob Dicks, who heard her cries for help about 10:20 a.m. Sunday. She had a cut to her head, and paramedics decided to have her flown to Atlanta Medical Center.

She was in fair condition this morning.

$100 snatched from woman

A man snatched $100 from a the hand of a woman, who then dropped $20 more after attempting to chase him down.

Police said the woman was standing in line to pay at the Daniel Street Food Mart at 512 Daniel St., when the man grabbed the bill from her hand and sprinted out the door.

While chasing him down, the woman dropped another $20 in the parking lot and couldn’t find it afterward.

Police couldn’t find the man or the dropped bill.

‘Lock him up!’

An 82-year-old woman told Troup County sheriff’s deputies that she wanted her husband of 63 years locked up because he went to the bank and withdrew about $300 that belonged to her. Her husband, also 82, said she went into the bedroom and started scratching him and hitting him with a book.

The woman was taken to the hospital by ambulance because her chest hurt and her blood pressure was up.

Arrests

— Robert Daniel Ward, 44, of Lower Glass Bridge Road was charged after a burglary early Sunday morning at Ribitz convenience store on West Point Road.

Store clerk Omprakash Patel told Troup County sheriff’s deputies that a man smashed the rear window and entered the store, taking several items. Patel came downstairs when he heard the alarm and confronted the burglar, who went back through the window and ran off.

A deputy who looked at video from the store’s surveillance camera recognized the man and knew where he lived. As the deputy traveled toward the suspect’s residence, he saw him coming out of the woods in the 500 block of Lower Glass Bridge Road. The man had fresh blood on his left hand and several packs of cigarettes in his pocket.

Ward was taken back to the store, where Patel identified him as the burglar.

— Octavia Denise Manley, 34, of South Page Street was charged with possession of cocaine and driving on a suspended license.

— Cody Lynch, 22, of Alford Street was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school zone.

Counterfeit money passed

— Two men used two $5 bills that were washed and altered to look like $100 bills to purchase about $30 worth of items from CVS Pharmacy at 201 Greenville St.

— A man traded in three $20 bills and four $10 bills for a $100 bill in Moe’s Southwest Grill at 1468 Lafayette Parkway. His bills turned out to be counterfeit.

— Fake $20 bills were used to pay for a tattoo done by artists from Aart Accent at 1316 Hogansville Road.

— A customer used a fake $20 to purchase coffee from Starbucks Coffee at 1470 Lafayette Parkway.

Fraud

A man who recently filed his taxes found out he owes the Internal Revenue Service about $4,000 because someone else was using his Social Security number.

Thefts, burglaries

— A Samsung Gravity 2 cell phone, various other electronics and jewelry, with a total value of $905, were taken from a residence in the 200 block of Handley Street.

— A lawnmower and weed trimmer with a total value of $300 were taken from a residence in the 1400 block of Murphy Avenue.

— About $262 was taken from a dresser of a residence in the 700 block of Colquitt Street.

— A generator valued at $500 was stolen from a shed in the 1100 block of Warner Road.

— A woman said she laid her wallet and cell phone on the roof of her car and drove away from at Pony Express on Vernon Road. The items fell off and were lost or stolen.
