Bruce, a senior defensive lineman who has signed with Duke University, participated in an all-star game pitting players from Georgia and Alabama.
The game, which was played in the Columbus Civic Center, followed Arena League-rules, with eight players on each side, and the field was a lot shorter than what the players are used to.
“It was awesome. He had a great time,” said Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins, who made the trip with Bruce.
Bruce’s Georgia team, which featured players mostly from the area, won the game.
Wiggins said Bruce played most of the game and made several tackles. A three-year starter, Bruce helped the Cavs win back-to-back region titles and advance to the state quarterfinals last season.
“He’s the kind of guy you want to coach,” Wiggins said. “Every time the weight room door opens, he’s there.”
Another Callaway player, wide receiver Quantavius Leslie, was supposed to play in the game, but he decided not to after playing in a basketball game the day before.
The Cavaliers were eliminated from the state tournament the day before the all-star game. Leslie has also has a bothersome ankle he injured earlier in the season.
Leslie has signed a letter of intent with West Virginia.
