Continuing education classes - from Korean culture to do-it-yourself home repair - will be offered at the Columbus State University campus in West Point.

Continuing education can be known as the “fun” kind of classes mentioned above, or they can allow those already in a career to receive further certification, said Kristin Barker, marketing manager for the continuing education department.

“It’s not the same time commitment as a regular degree program,” she said.

It’s not the same cost commitment, either.

Sometimes, a course in continuing education can help a student decide if he wants to enter into a degree program.

“It’s getting over the fear of ‘should I even try?’ ” Barker said.

Meanwhile, the academic side of the West Point campus still is growing, with 27 “core” classes offered in subjects like English, math, history, criminal justice and political science.

“We’re open four days a week and all our classes are full,” said David Kerr, West Point’s former police chief, who is now an instructor at and spokesman for the campus.

The West Point CSU campus at 405 W. 8th St. will hold an open house from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday in anticipation of students registering for fall classes. Kerr said residents may come and learn what the college has to offer, as well as get answers to questions on enrollment procedures and financial aid.

To check out continuing education classes in West Point and at the main campus in Columbus, visit conted.colstate.edu. Barker and Kerr said there’s a survey on the Web site to allow potential students to tell the school what classes they may like to see in the future.

“We hope you’ll tell us what you’re interested in,” Kerr said.
