Mr. Mowers was born August 2, 1943 in Belvedere, IL, son of Helen Hicks Mowers Hanson and the late Gerald Julius Mowers. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and was employed with Alcan Company and later with Trinidad Benham Corp as a forklift operator before retiring. Mr. Mowers was retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service. During which time he proudly served on the U.S.S. Midway during the Vietnam Conflict and received numerous medals. During his enlistment, he was chosen for a special assignment called “Operation Deepfreeze 63” and received the Antarctic Ribbon for this special operation at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica.
Survivors in addition to his mother, Helen Mowers Hanson of Illinois, include his wife and soul mate, Kathy Mowers of Pine Mountain, GA; two sons, Kirk (Tiffany) Mowers of Pine Mountain Valley, GA and Jody (Jennifer) Adams of Pine Mountain, GA; two daughters, Daylene Phillips of Pine Mountain, GA and Jenny (Brian) Steele of LaGrange; twelve grandchildren; one brother, Jerry “Butch” Mowers; two sisters, Barbara Naker and Cora Wirts all of Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services, with full military honors, will be held 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at Bethany Baptist Church, Pine Mountain, GA with Reverend Jimmy Minter and Reverend Derrick Powell of Cottondale, FL officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be the great nephews from Cottondale, FL.
The family will be at the home of his wife, Kathy Mowers, and will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.
