A Cleveland Avenue woman was treated at West Georgia Medical Center after she broke a utility pole and crashed into a tree in a one-vehicle accident.

Police said Tongia Hale, 39, was driving on Springdale Drive at Virginia Avenue when her Toyota Tacoma drifted to the right and struck the pole, sideswiped two mailboxes and crashed into a tree about 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers said Hale was lethargic and had slurred speech at the medical center, and other drivers reported seeing her passed out at the wheel of her vehicle on Vernon Street near Crockett Brothers’ before the wreck.

She was treated at the hospital, then taken to Troup County jail on charges of driving under the influence, driving on a expired tag and failure to maintain lane.
