The Callaway School Cavaliers needed a win.
Coming off two losses, a heartbreaking 8-7 loss to Manchester, and a 6-1 loss to Pike County, the team was looking to get back on track against the Northside Patriots.
And they did.
They withstood a late Northside rally to win 11-9 and improve to 7-3.
“It was a good win today,” Callaway coach Dusty Hubbard said. “I’m really proud of our guys. We lost two in a row, and it was the first time we lost two in a row, and it was a good win for us to bounce back. I thought we played hard.”
Northside was down 11-3 heading into the final inning, but it scored six runs before Tanner Thompson got the final out on a flyout.
Brew Parker pitched the first five innings to get the win.
“We probably could have pitched a little better, but they hit the ball good too,” Hubbard said. “So, its a good win for us going into a big region game on Friday, and I’m really proud of our guys.”
Northside took advantage of some shaky defensive play by Callaway to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Cavaliers gathered themselves, and came back in the bottom of the inning, getting RBI singles from Chris Laye and Daniel Crowe and a sacrifice fly from Kyle Williams to gain the lead 4-3.
The Cavaliers followed up in the bottom of the second pushing across five more runs from RBI singles from Parker, Crowe, and catcher Luke Buruss to take a 9-3 advantage.
Parker took over the game from there, lasting until the fifth inning before giving way to Thompson.
The Patriots got within two in the seventh on a three-run home run before Thompson closed the door.
Callaway hosts Crawford County at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
