A man was charged with arson after a fire at a woman’s apartment in West Point.
West Point police said Mon Trimphle Zackery, 36, of Nelson Road was arrested after a fire at the apartment in the 1400 block of Higgins Street about 4:30 a.m. Saturday.
Police were told that Zackery had been in an altercation in LaGrange in which he had struck a woman, threw a tire iron through the window of a vehicle, then said he wasn’t “done with this yet,” took a gas can and left her residence.
The West Point apartment later was burned. Smoke damage could be seen throughout the apartment Monday afternoon, and the woman’s bedroom was completely burned.
The apartment is a triplex, with two apartments attached to it.
A 16-year-old and his parents were asleep in another apartment during the blaze. The father attempted to put the fire out with a garden hose.
“The fireman were actually able to get the fire under control,” West Point police Sgt. Shannon Duncan said. “Thank God no one was injured.”
Smoke damage was visible in all three apartments.
Zackery was charged with two counts of arson and may face other charges.
“There probably are some charges still pending based on the occupied dwelling,” Duncan said. “It’s still under investigation.”
