Three former Troup High School students helped raise more than $7,500 to fight hunger. And they did it simply by using their legs.

Evie Kee, Heather Coe and Joyclyn Wortham, now Auburn University freshmen, walked 60 miles with about 90 other Auburn students to the Alabama state Capitol in Montgomery.

Sponsored by Auburn University’s Committee of 19, a campus student organization dedicated to fighting world hunger, the three-day “Hunger March to Montgomery” saw students committing themselves to making a statement for those in need.

“We each raised money, a minimum of $75, and we marched from Auburn University to the state House in Montgomery,” Kee said Tuesday, “and we walked each step of the way.”

Marchers began 8 at a.m. Saturday at the campus walking toward Tallassee, Ala. They stayed at Elam Baptist Church in Tallassee on Saturday and Lakeview Baptist Church outside Montgomery on Sunday before arriving at the Capitol steps Monday afternoon.

“We walked 25 miles on Saturday and Sunday, and 10 Monday,” Kee said.

Some state political leaders met the group in a rally at the Capitol steps.

Although the Committee of 19 has held a hunger march before, this was Kee’s first time participating.

“We were blessed with great weather,” Kee said, although “the walking was tough.”

Auburn student Emma Keller, president of the committee, said having the group march for the same cause is an incredible experience.

“It is unacceptable that 1.02 billion people in our world do not have enough food, especially since there is more than enough to go around,” Keller said. “One step at a time, we are working to end hunger.”
