FRANKLIN - The Callaway Cavaliers’ bats came alive Tuesday against homestanding Heard County.
The Cavs hit two grand slams in a 21-7 Region 5-AA victory in Franklin.
Chris Laye and Dominique Smedley each had six RBIs to power the Cavs.
Freshman Kane Keith got the start and win for the Cavs, pitching four innings and giving up four unearned runs.
Freshman Hunter Heath came in in relief, his first time on the varsity mound, and pitched 2 1/3 innings of shutout ball.
The scoring started early for the Cavs as they put up four runs in the first inning when Laye cleared the bases with a grand slam.
Later in the game, Laye drove in two more runs on a double.
The team ended up giving the runs back to the Braves through four errors, and by the end of the inning the score was tied 4-4.
The Cavs shut the door on the Braves in the sixth inning when Smedley stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam, which would place the game out of reach for the Braves.
Smedley also brought home two more runs with an RBI double in the fourth inning.
Hubbard said he was really proud of the way that the team hit during the game, but wants the team to tune up its defensive play and do away with the errors that cost them four runs in the game.
“With our intensity and the way we played out there, I was really proud of them,” Hubbard said. “We have got to get back up to par defensively. We let them score four runs in the first and ended up with four errors. We have to clean up our play, especially with the way we are swinging the bat.”
The win brings the Cavs record to 10-3 overall and 6-2 in region play.
The Cavs look to extend their home winning streak on Friday when they take on Region 5-AA foe Macon County at home.
