A man with more than a pound of marijuana in his car led officers on a chase about 7 p.m. Wednesday that started in Coweta County and ended near the weigh station on Interstate 85 north of LaGrange.

A Coweta sheriff’s deputy had tried to stop the Chevrolet Tahoe for traveling 80 mph, but the car accelerated.

Hogansville police and state troopers joined the chase, and the car swerved toward a Hogansville officer. A state trooper put out stop sticks to deflate the tires, but the suspect spotted them and crossed the median.

The Tahoe went the wrong way in the northbound lanes for a short distance before an officer used a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle, which traveled down an embankment. The suspect tried to run, but was arrested.

A Coweta patrol car caught fire, but it was put out with a portable fire extinguisher.

Anthony Marquise Carter, 31, of Clayton County was charged with fleeing and attempting to elude, aggravated assault on a police officer and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
