Drexel Meadors, West Point’s municipal court judge for the last 20 years, has announced his intention to retire.

“We certainly thank him for his years of service to the city,” said Mayor Drew Ferguson IV.

Now, Ferguson and City Council will set about looking for his replacement.

Although a local attorney, Benjamin Wilcox, has expressed interest in the job, council decided at a work session Thursday to put a notice out to see if anyone else wants the job - and to review the requirements it has for city judge to make sure they’re current.

The city normally reappoints its municipal court judge every January. It’s considered a part-time position, although the judge may need to be available at any hour of the day or night. The judge’s current salary in West Point is $10,000 a year.
