Man sentenced in shooting case

A LaGrange man was sentenced Friday to four years in prison, six years’ probation and restitution of $936.83 for a shooting Oct. 1 near Unity Elementary School on Park Avenue.

Donatavious Sawaye Morgan, 18, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Police said Christopher Patterson and Larry Hardy Jr. were walking through the school parking lot when a car stopped and someone in the vehicle called them over. Morgan, who was in the back seat, fired about five shots in the victims’ direction, hitting Patterson in the small of the back. He was flown to an Atlanta hospital for treatment.

Others sentenced Friday after pleading guilty were:

n William Allen Smith, 44, of Hogansville; four years in prison and six years’ probation for simple assault, simple battery, terroristic threats and threatening witnesses in a proceeding.

n Joseph Lee Thompson, 58, of LaGrange; two years in prison for tampering with evidence. He concealed cocaine to obstruct the prosecution of another person.

n Steven Douglas Thompson, 19, of Hogansville; two years at the county Correctional Institute and three years’ probation for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Arrests

Calvin Hurston, 25, of Front Street was arrested Thursday after DNA evidence tied him to a burglary on Aug. 10 in the 900 block of Kelley Street.

The victim had told police he returned home to find an unknown man inside. He chased the burglar, but he got away with some jewelry.

Police said the GBI crime lab matched Hurston with DNA from the crime scene. He was being held at the county jail on burglary charges.

n Nathaniel Cameron, 37, of Kelley Street was arrested Friday afternoon after he allegedly pointed a shotgun at another man in the 100 block of Wright Street.

The victim said he saw Cameron smoking crack behind his residence, and he told him to leave and not come back. Cameron allegedly started yelling at the victim, saying he was a grown man and he could not tell him what to do.

Cameron allegedly went to his truck and got the shotgun from behind the seat and placed a round in the chamber, then pointed it at the victim and threatened to kill him. The victim called 911.

Cameron was charged with pointing a gun at another and possession of a firearm by a convicted. He also had an outstanding warrant for theft by taking.
