LaGrange’s West Georgia Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol has been named the Georgia Wing’s “Squadron of the Year” for 2010.

The award was made over the weekend at a conference in Norcross.

In presenting the award, wing commander Col. Tonya Boylan said the unit came from almost nothing at the beginning of 2009 to become one of the largest and fastest-growing units in the wing and the Southeast region.

With more than 80 members on its roster, the squadron hosts search-and-rescue exercises almost monthly, flies both Civil Air Patrol and Air Force Junior ROTC cadets on orientation rides, and has one of the most active ground team programs in the state.

Squadron Commander Maj. Brion Gluck passed credit for the award to the officers and cadets of the squadron, saying they do the real work.

In addition, Gluck, a pilot, was selected “Senior Member of the Year” for Georgia Wing, and his son, Cadet Lt. Col. Julian Gluck., whi is attending the U.S. Air Force Academy, was named “Cadet of the Year.”

Additionally, the squadron’s deputy commander for cadets, Capt. John Burgess, received the Frank G. Brewer Memorial Aerospace Award from the Georgia Wing.

There are more than 40 squadrons and flights in Georgia, divided into six groups.

Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with 58,000 members nationwide. It performs 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions. The members aid in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 23,000 young people participating in CAP cadet programs.
