Georgia’s unemployment rate hit a record high 10.6 percent last month.

That’s up slightly from the 10.5 percent reported in February and up 1.6 percentage points from 9.0 percent at the same time last year.

The Georgia Department of Labor released March unemployment figures today.

The state’s unemployment rate has exceeded the national rate, which is now 9.7 percent, for 30 consecutive months. The number of jobless workers in Georgia rose to 497,500 last month from 494,321 in February.

Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said modest job growth over the last two months suggests that a recovery may be gaining traction.

LaGrange’s rate remains one of the highest in the state, despite falling from 13.7 percent in January to 13.4 percent last month. That trails only Lawrenceville, with 15.7 percent, and Dalton, at 13.5 percent, among Georgia cities. LaGrange posted a 14.3 percent rate in February 2009.

Troup County’s rate also fell slightly, to 13.1 percent in February from 13.2 percent the previous month.

Heard County posted a 13.5 percent jobless rate, down from 13.7 percent, while Meriwether County saw its rate rise to 15.3 percent in February, up from 14.4 a month earlier.

Harris County recorded the lowest unemployment figure in the area, 8.1 percent, down from 8.2 percent in January.

Rates for February 2009 were: Troup County, 12.1 percent; Heard County, 12.9 percent, Meriwether County, 12.7 percent; and Harris County, 6.8 percent.
