It’s been a thrilling couple of games for the LaGrange Grangers.
Just three days after beating Troup on penalty kicks, the Grangers did it again on Monday.
Northside and LaGrange were tied 2-2 after regulation, and after neither team scored in overtime, it went to penalty kicks.
LaGrange made three penalty kicks and Northside made two, giving the Grangers the win, and the No. 2 seed in Region 2-AAA behind Columbus.
Also on Monday, Troup’s boys’ team came up on the short end of a 3-0 decision against Columbus, and the Tigers will be the No. 3 seed from Region 2-AAA.
LaGrange’s girls’ team, meanwhile, fell to Northside 4-2 for its first region loss of the year.
For the LaGrange boys’ team, Paul Hutton scored both of the goals in regulation.
Hutton, Everett Quintana and Aaron Gregg each made their penalty kicks, and goal keeper Donnie Palmer came up big to preserve the win.
LaGrange will be at home against Auburn (Ala.) on Wednesday in a non-region game.
In Monday’s girls’ game, the Lady Grangers dropped their first Region 2-AAA game of the season.
Cassidy Kemp and Cami Ferguson scored for LaGrange, but it wasn’t enough.
Northside charged out to a 3-0 lead and held on for the victory.
The loss leaves LaGrange (8-7 overall) at 4-1 in region play heading into Wednesday’s home showdown against Columbus.
If LaGrange can win that game, it would move into a tie for first.
TROUP
The Tigers were unable to find the net in a loss to Columbus.
Columbus’ defense was so good that goal keeper Greg Bingham only needed to make one save.
Zack Ketchum scored twice for Columbus.
Columbus scored a goal shortly before the half, and it put up two more goals in the second half to pull away.
Troup appears to be headed for a first-round state test at Liberty County, but the brackets haven’t been finalized.
