And as for the Callaway Cavaliers and LaGrange College Panthers, it’s time to reflect on their remarkable seasons.
LaGrange crunched Thomson 34-6 Saturday night at Callaway Stadium in the second round of the Class AAA playoffs.
LaGrange (10-2) advances to the quarterfinals where it will take on Dunwoody Friday at 7:30 p.m. at North DeKalb Stadium.
Dunwoody (12-0), the champion of Region 5-AAA, beat North Hall 18-13 on Friday.
The Grangers are in the quarterfinals for the sixth time this decade, and they’re in the hunt for their fourth state title since 2001.
“It’s a really good season right now, and we’re just trying to make it better,” La-Grange head coach Steve Pardue said.
Callaway was hoping to advance to the quarterfinals of the Class AA playoffs, but the Cavaliers lost to Pepperell 40-20.
Callaway had no answer for Pepperell’s running attack.
Brandon Whitaker ran for 257 yards and five touchdowns to lead Pepperell into the quarterfinals for the second straight year.
“We just kept powering the ball down the field all night,” Whitaker said. “Our offense line adjusted real quick to the turf.”
Despite the loss, it was a historic season for the Cavaliers, who won the first region title in school history before beating Greater Atlanta Christian for the program’s first playoff win.
LaGrange College is also coming off a remarkable season.
The Panthers didn’t win a game in 2006 and 2007 – their first two seasons of football – but they went 9-2 this season and won a conference championship.
LaGrange College just had no answer for a Millsaps team that is ranked third in NCAA Division III.
Mike Dubose, the former Alabama head coach, has Millsaps in championship contention in his third year at the program.
The Panthers did get a huge game from sophomore quarterback Drew Carter in the loss.
Carter completed 24-of-46 passes for 360 yards and four touchdowns.
Devin Billings and Eric Miller each had a pair of touchdown catches, with Billings hauling in seven passes for 100 yard.
Freshman Gerald Reed, filling in for the injured Mario Wallace, ran for 96 yards on 13 attempts.
At Callaway Stadium Saturday, the Grangers had three safeties in the convincing win.
LaGrange also got touchdown runs from Ocie Salter and Xavier Heard, Darren Hairston retuned a punt for a touchdown, and Rodney Tolbert threw a fourth-quarter scoring pass to Matt Pauley.
LaGrange’s defense was dominant, holding Thomson scoreless until the final five seconds of the game.
The Grangers advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2005.
“Like I told them before the game, there’s a party next weekend, and only eight people get to come,” Pardue said.”We had to become that last team.”
