For sale: the American Legion golf course in LaGrange.

Legion Post 75 recently put the 107 acres on the market for $4.28 million, or $40,000 per acre. The property on Hamilton Road near Interstate 85 includes a nine-hole golf course and clubhouse, a legion clubhouse and maintenance buildings.

In recent years, developers have expressed an interest in 30 acres of the property with a forest of large old hardwoods, but the legion board “realized that there would be even stronger interest from developers if the entire property were available for sale,” LaGrange Mayor Jeff Lukken said.

Lukken, an attorney, was asked to assist in the negotiation and sale of the property, having previously represented the legion on legal issues and contract negotiations.

“There has been an amazing amount of interest in the property, ranging from interested developers talking about mixed use development plans, to excited businessmen working on options for a revitalized golf course with surrounding homes and townhouses,” Lukken said.

One interested businessman works with a Korean company that locates investment opportunities.

The golf club has about 50 members, and Post 75 has 88 members. The post used to lease the course, but has operated it for the past few years.

The nine-hole layout was designed by J.B. McGovern, an associate of Donald Ross, one of the nation’s top course architects. Ross designed Highland Country Club in LaGrange.

It would be sad to see it go. Considering how over-priced the other courses are in the immediate area, losing the Legion will drive a lot of people out of the game. Hopefully whoever buys it plans to keep it a golf course.

I remember when this was the fairgrounds.I bet you could have bought the whole shebang for the price of a couple acres now, with a hootchie-coochie show thrown in to boot.
