The woman, who lives alone, said she heard a loud banging on her front door about 4:45 a.m. and she yelled through the door for the man to go away. He demanded she open the door and she again told him to go away. He pounded on the door and shook the window so hard that the interior blinds fell to the floor.
She fired a pistol through the window and the bullet struck him in the chest. He went about 100 yards to the side of the road where a pedestrian found him lying on his back about 6:10 a.m. The man was flown to Atlanta Medical Center, where he was in stable condition and expected to be released Thursday.
The hospital identified the man as Jacobo Lopez, but no age and address was available.
The shooting remained under investigation.
