Police said the youth was visiting a cousin at Lucy Morgan Homes in the 500 block of Borton Street when an 18- to 19-year-old man approached him and attempted to start a fight because of a girl the youth had been talking with.
The victim told police the man pushed him in the back as he tried to walk away, causing him to fall. The man then struck him in the face.
The youth’s jaw was swollen, and he couldn’t open it. He was taken to West Georgia Medical Center, where doctors said it was broken.
No arrests have been made.
Man tries to steal potted plants
A man was in the mood for spring as he stole eight hanging flower pots from the LaGrange Farmer’s Market at 606 Greenville St.
Witnesses who know the man saw him moving through the parking lot with the plants, with a total value of $112.
A friend of the business’ owner yelled at the man to put the plants back, and the would-be thief placed them on the ground and ran down Horance King Street.
He was identified and charged with shoplifting.
Damage
— The bill acceptor was removed from a Coca-Cola machine in front of Fuller Superette at 900 Hamilton St., causing about $5,000 damage.
— A vandal shattered the back-door window of a residence in the 600 block of Park Avenue, causing about $150 damage.
Thefts, burglaries
— A 2010 Mercury Milan valued at $25,000 was stolen from Avis Car Rental at 1468 Lafayette Parkway.
— Various electronics valued at $2,830 were stolen from a rental truck in the parking area of Simply Self Storage at 2170 West Point Road.
— Prescriptions of Xanax and Percocet were taken from the bedroom closet of a residence in the 200 block of Chatham Street. The pills were valued at $600.
— A Dell desktop computer, a 19-inch flat-screen TV and a Canon inkjet printer were stolen from a residence in the 1300 block of Polk Street. The electronics were valued at $520.
— A group of juveniles stole $70 worth of ice cream, candy and potato chips and three T-shirts valued at $30 from Whites-ville Super Stop at 801 Whitesville St.
— A child’s electric John Deere tractor valued at $316 was stolen from a carport in the first block of Wilcox Road.
Man with felony convictions gets 20 years on drug charges
A LaGrange man with four previous felony convictions was sentenced to 20 years in prison Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine and marijuana.
An informant told Troup County sheriff’s officers that Paul Lewis Smith, 49, and his wife,Tina, 45, were selling meth and prescription drugs from their home on Pop Reese’s Road. A search of the residence turned up drugs “kind of all over the place,” said Assistant District Attorney William Hocutt IV.
Tina Smith and another woman pleaded guilty earlier and received three years in prison and two years’ probation.
At the time of their arrest, the Smiths were on probation from a previous drug case in which numerous items of stolen property were recovered.
Others sentenced after pleading guilty were:
— Debrozzo Tomarco Johnson, 37, of West Point; five years in prison and five years’ probation for two counts of selling cocaine.
Co-defendant Gloria Dean Reed, 55, of LaGrange received 20 days in jail, four years and 345 days’ probation, and a $1,000 fine on the same charges.
— Ronnie Lakeith Swint, 29, of LaGrange; two years in prison and eight years’ probation for two counts of selling cocaine.
Co-defendant Ashley Bowen, 24, of LaGrange received three years’ probation, a $500 fine and 200 hours’ community service on reduced charges of cocaine possession.
— Earnest Brown, 48, of LaGrange; two years in prison and eight years’ probation for attempted kidnapping, two counts of simple assault, driving without a license, reckless driving and DUI.
