For now, Troup High basketball standout Pascale West is focused on trying to make the most of her senior season.
The Lady Tigers have struggled during West’s previous three seasons at the school, but she believes the team may have what it takes to turn the corner this year.
“My hopes are bigger than anything,” the 6-foot-7 West said. “I want to do a lot better. I think it’s going to be a big year.”
Troup opens its season on Tuesday with a home game against Greenville.
No matter what happens this season, West’s college plans are secure.
After averaging 10 points and 10 rebounds during her junior season, West had a handful of major programs pursuing her.
After narrowing down her choices, she selected Auburn.
“When they offered me I started picturing myself there,” West said. “I’m very, very excited. When I came here in the ninth grade, I never pictured myself playing at a Division I school. I’m really excited right now.”
At a signing ceremony at the school, West was surrounded by family members, teachers, and coaches.
One of the coaches who has meant the most to West over the years is Tim Simpson, her travel-ball coach.
Wally West, Pascale’s father, said Simpson has “taken her under his wings. He has meant so much to her.”
Simpson, who previously coached LaGrange Academy standouts Lucy Ellison and Porsha Morgan, said he’s been impressed with the progress West has made over the years.
“Obviously there’s still a lot of work to do, but we’ve watched her mature,” Simpson said. “She has elevated our program just by our presence. Her family is very supportive.”
“It’s a projection. She’s been a credit to our organization. We’re very proud of her.”
Valerie West, Pascale’s mother, said Simpson is part of a team of people who has helped her daughter become the person she is.
“This has been a team effort,” Valerie said. “It’s taken everyone to get her where she is today. They’ve got her here athletically, academically and artistically. All those things put together have helped get her here today. This is a well-rounded person.”
