Troup County voters, like those across Georgia, go back to the polls Tuesday for runoff elections, including a U.S. Senate race with national implications.

All 16 local polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Counting primaries and primary runoffs, the election with be the fourth of the year for some Georgia voters.

The key race matches Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss and Democrat Jim Martin. With Democrats nearing a “filibuster proof” majority in the Senate, both parties have poured resources and attention into the race.

Republican vice presidential candidate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, was to tour the state today, stumping for Chambliss. Martin planned an Atlanta rally headlined by rapper Ludacris.

Other races on the ballot include a Georgia Court of Appeals contest between Sara Doyle and Mike Sheffield; and Georgia Public Service Commission runoff between Republican Lauren W. McDonald Jr. and Democrat Jim Powell.

Early voting between Nov. 17 and Nov. 26 attracted 2,771 residents of Troup County.
