ATLANTA - As the buzzer sounded throughout Colquitt Stadium on the campus of Woodward Academy Tuesday night signaling the end of the game, it also marked the end to LaGrange’s season.
In the end, the score from Tuesday’s Class AAA second-round playoff game between the Woodward Academy War Eagles and the Grangers will read 6-0, but the Grangers gave everything they had to compete with the fourth-ranked War Eagles.
“We gave our all out there, and left it all on the field,” senior goalkeeper Donnie Palmer said.
The task was not an easy one for the Grangers.
The War Eagles came into the game riding a five-game win streak, including an 11-1 win over Peach County in the first round.
The Grangers were also hot, having beaten Troup and Northside down the stretch to secure Region 2-AAA’s second seed, and they thumped Thomson 9-1 in the first round.
Tuesday night’s game was all about the home team, though.
“My team came to play,” Granger head coach Keita Placide said. “They got down by one, and kind of dragged their heads a little bit, but they kept on fighting.”
The game started off as and evenly matched affair.
LaGrange was helped out earlier in the games by some stellar defensive play from their line players and Palmer.
The Grangers were able to hold until 4:11 left in the half when the War Eagles were able to sneak one by Palmer to take a 1-0 lead.
Three minutes late,r the War Eagles scored again to take a 2-0 lead into the half.
In the second half, the War Eagles scored four more goals to pull away.
“The second half we put up a tough fight,” said Placide. “But when you are gambling and trying to come back and dig yourself out of a hole it’s really tough against a top-quality team. We had a couple of things going, but we could never follow through. Hats off to Woodward academy. We wish them the best of luck and hey, it is what it is.”
